The Decline and Probable Fall of the Scientology Empire

Biography Roald Dahl was born in Cardifff, Wales to Norwegian parents, who had made the Welsh city their home since the 1880s. Dahl grew up speaking Norwegian at home and his family even attended church services in their native tongue. He attended a local church-run school before boarding school in England. Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, Wales to Norwegian parents, Sofie and Harald. Emigrating from Norway in the 1880s, Harald made sure that his homeland continued to play a big part in family life: named after the Norwegian polar explorer and national hero, Roald Amundsen, Dahl was raised as a Lutheran.

Roald and his sisters always begged for their mother to tell them stories. Even at a very young age, Roald fell in love with story writing ‘Open your mouth,’ the doctor said, speaking Norwegian. I refused. I thought he was going to do something to my teeth, and everything anyone had ever done to my teeth had been painful.

He was also the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, and a treasury of original, evergreen, and beloved children’s books.

1900 – the approximate year in which Harald Dahl arrived in South Wales, having initially travelled to Paris (and possibly spent some time working at sea before this). In fact, the academics seemed to conclude that he “doesn’t quite fit anywhere” with his Norwegian, Welsh, English and American connections. I was particularly interested to hear Ann Alston speak about Dahl’s use of language in The BFG (my favourite Roald Dahl book). She explained that the BFG continuously “plays with language” and, whilst Sophie loves the way he speaks, she is also determined to teach him how to speak “properly”. Roald's parents were from Norway, but he was born in Wales.
